The Burnt Hills and Big Flats hosts a monthly operating session for local model railroaders. Sessions last from 7PM to approximately 9PM every third Tuesday. Sessions are announced to OFRRA members at their Yahoo Group, but one does not need to be a member of the OFRRA club in order to participate on the BH&BF.

The BH&BF is controlled using Digital Command Control by Easy DCC, so there are no tough control panels to learn. The vast majority of turnouts are manually controlled by pushing the points over with your finger.

Operating crew size can be up to nine people. Four or five mainline operators, two yard operators, a yard master, and a dispatcher. A 4:1 fast clock can be used.
